Most folks are concerned about their health, and a growing number of folks are concerned with the environment. It’s time to merge the topics, because green living is healthy living.
1. Using reusable shopping bags versus plastic or paper
The production of plastic and paper bags produce tons of environmental toxins. This means more free radicals taken into our bodies. Free radicals cause loads of damage to the human body such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, aging and weakened immunity.
Plastic bags are having a negative impact on the marine ecosystem as well which of course affects other ecosystems and diminishes our ability to be healthy. Trees that help our health by providing oxygen and absorbing some of the green house gasses are chopped down in order to make paper bags.
Using reusable bags for your grocery and shopping needs can help to avoid all of these problems. If we can reduce and/or eliminate our dependece on paper and plastic bags, the number of bags “consumed” worldwide will decrease, as will their production and associated negatives. So, if you haven’t already, get some reusable bags for your next trip to the store, mall, or beach.
2. Buying organic products
Organic products are by and far healthier for our bodies. The direct effect of eating non-organic foods is that we are ingesting pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones and antibiotics. The indirect effect to our health is the environmental impact that our planet incurs through conventional farming and its heavy use of land and chemicals that strip the soil. Produce grown in conventional farming is lower in precious minerals that our bodies need.
3. Using organic/biodegradable cleaners
Household chemicals contribute to free radical damage in our bodies. As a matter of fact, the life expectancy of women who stay at home is lower than women who work outside the home. The chemicals we use in our houses negatively impact all the occupants of the house.
4. Walking or biking instead of driving
Of course, the correlation to living green and being healthier is quite obvious when it comes to walking or biking to work or school rather than driving. Sometimes, the distance makes it impossible to do this, but if you live within a mile or two or even up to 15 miles if you’re biking, then it’s possible.
A large part of our obesity problem today is the sedentary lives that we all lead. A lot of our economic crisis has to do with our dependency on foreign oil. Imagine a world in which most people walked or biked to get around. Would we be thinner and healthier? Probably. Would we be dependent on terrorist nations for our oil? Probably not nearly as much.
It’s easy to see how being green can translate to being healthier. Give some or all of the suggestions a shot today and see how your health and outlook changes.
